Cleveland High School
The Choral Core
The goal is to bring quality choral music performances to the community. The CHS School Improvement Plan includes increased articulation between CHS and feeder schools – through planned performances, such articulation would be achieved by exposing the MS students/parents to the CHS music program.

Grout Elementary
Music Pals
The goal of the project is to creatively unite generations using music by increasing interaction between elderly retirees and school age children. For both groups they will provide the opportunity for musical expression and positive intergenerational interaction.

Irvington Elementary
Irvington Music/Choir 2004-05
The goal is to teach children the fundamentals of music, with an emphasis on singing, which children can take anywhere and will last them a lifetime. Introduce children to a variety of music and culminate in a Human Relations assembly that is a traditional highlight of the school year.

Marshall High School
Ethos/Renaissance Arts Music Project
The goal is to create a partnership with a community-based organization to enhance the school’s ability to provide music education to students. They will offer two types of music classes after school, for 2-4 hours per class per week.
Award: $5,000

Open Meadow MS & Peninsula Elementary
African Arts & Culture Partnership
The project will connect an existing music program at an alternative middle school with a neighborhood public elementary school, thus creating a musical partnership between students through a residency in African drumming. The project will focus mainly on the techniques of Ghanaian drumming and a study of Ghanaian arts and culture.

Roosevelt High School
KBOO/Roosevelt-ACT Parnership for Music & Student Voice
Goals of the KBOO/RHS partnership and the development of a satellite music/sound recording facility on the RHS campus are: to enhance music offerings by creating an alternative pathway for students to learn about music and sound recording – encourage expression of student talent and voice – facilitate cross-curricular student projects using music and sound recording.

Woodlawn Elementary
Woodlawn Band Program
The goal of this project is to create a sustainable instrumental music program by connecting the program to music opportunities in the community. This grant will allow Ethos, Inc. to work with band students to advance their skills in music arrangements, combining Orff and band instruments, in their general music class. It is hoped that this program’s success would enable a parent advocacy group to re-establish band at Whitaker MS and Jefferson HS.

Binnsmead Marimba Band
Advance the skills of students who have played Marimba at Marysville and to expand the number of students involved in marimba and music.

Portland Youth Choir CD’s
Rehearsals, planning and production of CD to be distributed to all PPS elementary school teachers for classroom use.

Gray Middle School
Robert Gray Middle School Marimba Band
Bringing together a diverse group of students to form an African-style Marimba band.
Award: $4,500.00

Grout Elementary School
Connecting Writing and Music
Teaching students to make connections between writing and music by using their writing skills to create song lyrics.
Award: $5,000.00

Marysville Elementary School
Marysville Instrumental Music
Increasing the current Marimba Band program’s visibility and connection with the Portland community while moving towards self-sufficiency. Also, expanding the general instrumental music program.
Award: $4,893.00

Rose City Park Elementary
Rose City Park Music Program
Helping students develop musical skills and appreciation to enrich their lives. Increase all students abilities to perform well academically and socially. Forming another avenue to expand and strengthen the RCP community.

Applegate Elementary School
Music Program
Working with the non-profit group, Ethos Inc., Applegate will offer in-school and after-school choral and keyboard programs.
Award: $5,000.00

Boise Eliot Elementary School
Primary Colors Boost
The grant will help purchase new materials, uniforms and supplies for the Primary Colors choir of 2nd through 5th grade students.
Award: $2,800.00


Capitol Hill Elementary School
Children’s Community Choir
Under the direction of Ralph Nelson, 4th and 5th grade students from all areas of Portland will form a community choir based at Capitol Hill Elementary School.
Award: $3,000.00

Cleveland High School
Multicultural Music Motivation
To increase student engagement and respect for other cultures, multicultural music will become an integral part of the Freshman Global Studies curriculum.

Franklin High School
Expansion of the Band Program
Through public performances and actively recruiting incoming middle school students, both participation in and public awareness of the Franklin Band will increase.
Award: $3,000.00

Lewis Elementary School
Concert Band and Recorder Ensemble
Expanding the concert band and 3rd grade recorder ensemble, Lewis School will engage more students in instrumental music.

Marysville Elementary School
Marysville Marimba
By presenting Community performances, recording and CD, and learning from a guest instructor, Marysville Marimba Band students will build on their past success.

Mercy Corps
Music-based Multicultural Education in Portland Public Schools
Twenty-four Portland Public School teachers will be trained in a music-based multicultural educational program that improves student tolerance and knowledge of world music.
Award: $5,000.00

Stephenson Elementary School
Notes to Live By
Stephenson parents and teachers will develop and support a music literacy program that provides a weekly, school-wide music program.

FIRST OCTAVE GRANTS – FALL 1999

ABERNETHY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Music Instrument Grant
By purchasing a set of Orff musical instruments, all Abernethy students will receive music instruction based on a curriculum that stresses rhyme, creative movement, dancing, singing, playing classroom instruments, listening and analyzing.

FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL & METROPOLITAN LEARNING CENTER
Sound of Music
An innovative approach to studying musical sound and the properties of different musical scales through scientific and mathematical methods, this collaboration between Franklin, MLC and the Community Music Center will develop a new curriculum meeting that meets CIM work sample requirements in three disciplines in science and math.

Instrumental Outreach Grant
Extending the impact of last year’s First Octave Grant, this project would provide additional cross-school learning and performance exchanges, increase the number of available percussion instruments and host a visit by a local youth symphony.

Kelly Kids Take "Portland Musical" to Town
A children’s chorus of 3rd - 5th graders from Kelly will present "Portland - A Musical" at the City Club in the spring and with the Oregon Symphony at Waterfront Park in June as part of Portland’s 150th birthday celebration.

Musical PALS at Laurelhurst and in the Community
The project creates a pilot partnership between 3rd graders at Laurelhurst and seniors at Providence Medical Center Elderplace; students and older adults will sing together and perform with Orff instruments.

FIRST OCTAVE GRANTS – SPRING 1998

ATKINSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Music Centers
The goal of the grant is to improve music education at Atkinson through community performances and exercises that strengthen students’ listening skills. The project will include the use of "music centers," each containing activities that students must master before moving to the next station. The music center activities include arranging music and sound to tell a story and listening exercises that expose students to different types of musical styles from different countries.

BALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Music Curriculum Revival
In a school where music has been completely cut from the curriculum, this project intends to provide music curriculum & training for PK – 2 teachers who will integrate music into their classes. In addition, through collaboration with the Community Music Center, children with motor skill delays will be targeted to receive special music education. Through individualized instruction in music, these students will gain important skills that research has proven to help children learn how to read.

Cleveland High School Choirs
The First Octave Fund grant is to be used to purchase badly needed choral music for the 180 students participating in the Cleveland choirs.

Historical Opera
Connecting music with the core disciplines of history, language arts, science & mathematics, this project presents a student-written & produced historical opera based on the Lewis & Clark Expedition.

Classics in the Classroom
Monthly units of classical music integrate literature, history and art in the "Classics in the Classroom" curriculum. Guest artists will also speak about styles of music and demonstrate musical instruments.

Portland, A Musical History
Produced for a second year, "Portland, A Musical History" has quickly become a tradition performed by 3rd graders at Kelly Elementary School. The First Octave Fund grant will provide musical manuscripts, audiotapes and videotapes so that other elementary schools can replicate this entertaining, educational program.
