How to Apply for a Grant (Download Application)

Application Deadline: Proposals must be received at the Portland Schools Foundation by close of business day on October 1, 2007.

Beginning in 2006, the First Octave Fund added support for school-based arts projects as well as music projects.

CRITERIA:

Through the First Octave Fund, the Foundation will be supporting specific and innovative school-based projects to strengthen art and  music education in our schools.  Grants up to $5,000 must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • School-based projects that integrate art and music into core academic subjects and connect art and music to the goals of the School Improvement Plan .
  • Creating new partnerships with community-based organizations, artists or musicians to enhance a school’s ability to provide art or music education to more students.  Preference will be given to grants that will “jump start” new partnerships that have a good chance of being sustained.
  • Connecting a school’s art or music program to the community,  thereby building a stronger connection between the school and the need for more community support of art and music education in our schools.

Although the Foundation is extremely aware of how budget cuts have profoundly affected each and every classroom and school, the Foundation is not in the position to fund core, ongoing programs or staff positions in Portland’s public schools.

WHO MAY APPLY

  • Teachers & school staff
  • Principals & school leadership teams
  • Parent Leaders (Local school foundations, PTAs, Site Councils, School Leadership Teams)
