The
First Octave Fund seeks to further music education in Portland
Schools to the point that it becomes a well-supported integral part of every core
curriculum. Recognizing the importance of music education for children,
the goal of the First Octave Grants
is to provide, enhance and maintain music education in elementary, middle
and high schools.
Since the program began, the Portland Schools Foundation has
awarded over 45 First Octave Grants for a total of more than
$175,000 and leveraged over $500,000 in in-kind promotional contributions from
generous sponsors.
How and Why First Octave was Started
In
the early 90's, serious tax cuts affecting school budgets began jeopardizing music
programs and art classes. These classes allowed children to grow and flourish
intellectually as well as creatively. In addition, music helped many students
"fit-in" with those around them and express themselves as individuals.

Jeff Poteet |
In
1996, two young professionals, Eric Mingorance and Jeff
Poteet, thought they could make a difference. With their experience in
promotion and marketing, they sought to raise community awareness and support
to counter the increasing lack of music education and consequently the decline
of a well-rounded curriculum.
For
nearly 2 years Jeff and Eric worked tirelessly with Cynthia Guyer
of the Portland Schools Foundation to form a partnership supporting
music in our schools. In 1997 First Octave was established as
a sponsored project of the Portland Schools Foundation.
The First Octave Grant Committee
Members
of the Grant Committee believe in First Octave's mission and volunteer their time
to help award the grants where the money can be the most effective for music education
in our schools.
