Did you know?
Approximately 80% of Portland Public Schools do not have full music programs and a little over 50% have no music program. Only 12 elementary schools out of 58 have art programs.

Our Mission:

First Octave, is dedicated to the premise that early and consistent music education fosters creative as well as intellectual values and is essential to a balanced core curriculum.

Who we are:
First Octave
, a sponsored project of the Portland Schools Foundation, is a non-profit fund that is specifically earmarked for music education. First Octave is made possible by the support of the community and caring corporations.

What we do:
The fund is dedicated to helping music programs for students of all grade levels. Since 1998 the First Octave Fund and the Portland Schools Foundation have raised and granted over $215,000 to Portland high schools, middle schools and elementary schools. Awards of $500 to $5,000 are made available to educators and community groups that meet the published guidelines. Corporations and individuals alike have donated time, money and resources to this worthy cause, and 90% of all money collected by First Octave go directly to the music programs.

Why we do it:
We love music and believe every child deserves music integration as part of a quality education. Studies show that students involved in music programs score 51% higher on the verbal and 39% higher on the math portion of the SAT test than students with no course work or experience in the arts. Music education increases children's academic performance in speech, mathematics and language.
The fact is - music matters!
